Since every solar panel is built using lots of individual cells its important to understand how these cells work. Solar cells convert one form of energy the suns light into another form of energy electrical power. If there is now sunlight or the day is very cloudy the solar panels will stop producing energy and that is when your batteries will kick in and keep supplying power when the sunlight returns the process will resume and power will be produced . Solar cells do not store electricity. At night, a solar electric system needs to store its power, usually batteries, to draw upon instead of the solar cells.

If your home is grid-connected you will have a power meter which measures your electrical energy usage, and will monitor both the electricity coming from the grid and to the grid from your solar power system. If you are producing more electricity then you are using, you will see you are actually turning this meter in reverse.
